Five Songs You Must Hear This Week: Light Year

Part Fourty-Seven. Light Year was created many aeons ago in a celestial orb east-side of Sydney, deep in the back-garden of Australia. The release of the ‘Night/Vision’ EP in 2010 brought the now cult classic LY track ‘Sex Education’ to the world’s attention and was eagerly played out, happily edited and highly recommended by Soulwax, Erol Alkan, Tiga and Mr Oizo.

That was only the start, for the release of ’5 Girls’ 6 months later was met with an even greater reception. The EP received a thorough tanning from deejays all over the world including revolving on the wheels of steel on BBC Radio 1. Light Year has also accumulated a serious amount of remix work over the last year with the likes of Bagraiders, Surkin, ZZT, Alex Gopher, Classixx & Feadz requesting the unique LY re-twist touch.

2011 has also brought jaunts of both Europe and America, both continents playing host to over a dozen packed out club soirees. Upon returning home LY performed a run of sell out gigs nationally including Splendour In The Grass and Parklife to celebrate the ‘5 Girl5 Remixed’ release, which featured handiwork from Strip Steve, Harvard Bass, Alex Gopher, and more. Light Year come screaming back into the year of the Apocalypse with a new 2 tracker on Bang Gang that displays a new sonic manipulative force and deep techno nature that this man is all too happy to write about – ‘Moderation’ is suggestive as to the sound that is achieved in this slice of tech-throbno house. And it would appear to feel that way in comparison to previous Light Year excursions. The b-side ‘Reversion’ steps up the acid factor and adds a slightly more hypnotic twist to the package. It, as the title suggests, is a revisited revised and slightly reversed version of the lead track. A walk around the park at dawn and a stroll into the after-hours hot-spot.

There they are, and here they are. Light Year for breakfast lunch and tea – it’s a healthy diet. Watch out for the remix pack dropping soon – but until then flog these to death…

I had been playing his previous track ‘Loreley’ ever since I saw Erol play it at Field Day here in Sydney in 2011. This has the same uplifting and melodic feel but it is a little tougher.

Wow!! I heard this yesterday for the first time and haven’t stopped listening to it. The change at 4.08 is just so cool. If this isn’t a pseudonym for Thom Yorke then this Sisi Bakbak sure sounds like Mr Yorke which is definitely not a bad thing.

I find the sound of the percussion in this track hypnotic. This was the track that made Andre 3000’s ‘The Love Below’ LP special for me and I can listen to this song over and over. The bass line is out of this world too.

I just love Matthew Dear, so I had to put one of his tracks in here. His new one is great too which is called ‘Headcage’ but this is just a classic.

I think this is one of the best remixes Tiga has done for a while. The groove, the sounds are all spot on but most of all the simplicity is what makes it for me.
