Ah oui oui. (Word!)

Also French 60's New Wave worth checking out.

Jules et Jim (Truffaut)
Rififi - (Dassin)

Honestly didn't really care much for 'The 400 Blows'

But just leading this on - if you want to see a homage to 60's new wave, and a pretty fine film in it's own right - Bertolucci's 'The Dreamers'

....

And while we're on Bertolucci - A Last Tango In Paris is always worth a watch, now pass me the butter.

And just leading this on some more with some contemporary french cinema - A Fille Sur Du Pont is a very fine little love story.

Sorry to be a twat but Rififi was filmed in the '50's and isn't New Wave.
However for similiar (and great I might add) check out Jean-Pierre Melville's work, especially Bob la flambuer.

I stand corrected - 1955.

However on the Criterion release, Jules Dassin himself (along with the Production Notes) not only refer to it as 'New Wave' but the first/earliest breakout 'New Wave' hit. The same shooting techniques (on location etc.) that Godard, Truffaut employed - are all there.

Whether you see it as New Wave, predating New Wave or Film Noir - either way it's a great movie, and the print on the Criterion release is pretty lush.

I thought this was terrible, not even the Portman factor could redeem it
really? mmmm i thought was really good, infact i watched it again last nite, ah well, to each their own!

DirtBox Wrote:One of my all time top ten favourite films of all time. Top ten. All time. Very prescient....apparently, it was ridiculed upon release as an OTT depiction of TV ballbags.....seems positively tame these days.
Just noticed I don't even have it on DVD or owt. Fool.....might have to dig out the old VHS.....
Yep its bloody amazing! Seemingly when it came out it didnt get the best reviews, as people were going in with the wrong idea of what the movie was, looking at it as a satire, when really it was intended to reflect what was going on at the time. Amazing how well it fits in today!! some bloody hilarious lines in it aswell tbf!

If you like herzog documentaries i recommend Mein Liebster Feind and his new one Encounters at the End of the World
mein liebster fiend is awesome. watched it for first time last week. they where all quite obvioulsy complete nutters. cant believe that the boat going down the rapids was part accident. that part of the film was mental

I'd see it as a film noir but you can't really argue with the director. Would definately see it as a precursor to the New Wave though.

Are the Dassin comments from special features? Might have to pick up the DVD.

Found it the other day at a market along with Speed, expect some classic one liners such as "Touch me again ill kill you" or "Oh it was an accident, you fell over and your dick fell in my wife". Another golden 90's action flick. A good drinking game would be to skull each time Bruce Willies gets punched in the face

Caught The Constant Gardener and In Search Of A Midnight Kiss at the weekend....

TCG was excellent, really recommended.

ISOAMK came off like a poor man's Before Sunset. Thought it was pretty weak considering the rave reviews it received. Disappointing.

The bad thing is that it is too short.
I have to say it is an amazing film, I wasn't able to stay on my seat because I didn't stop startling

As ever, a rubbish hollywood remake of 'Rec' is set to land in the next few weeks.

Also, saw 'Hunger' Steve McQueen's new film last week. Cannot recomend this any more highly. Best thing I've seen this year. Fucking INCREDIBLY brutal though. Not one for the easily shocked.

A MUST see in every sense.

This is a must see. I'm not really in to zombie films, but this is just brilliant. Don't think I'll be going to see the Hollywood remake though.

Saw Last King of Scotland yesterday and I got really caught up in it. A few gory moments that I wasn't expecting to see towards the end which made me wince a bit. A couple of brilliant performances from the lead roles. Overall, well worth a watch

Just finished watching, was pretty good! The way its shot gets a bit annoying at times i thought. Luckily its quite a short film.
