The referee at the time only booked Thatcher, then post match the ref gets a call from the FA and the ref says he thought Thatcher only shoulder barged Mendes, so the FA took it upon themselves to increase the penalty to Thatcher. So the FA must have spoken to Clattenburg, and he must of told them that he saw Rooney elbow the Wigan player, and he deemed it only worthy of a free kick. o_O The worst thing of all is that refereeing decisions this season in particular have to be spot on because the margin is so tight (looking at West Ham's onside injury time disallowed goal against Wolves for one such example... we'd currently be 16th if it had been given and wolves 19th). Just a shame because the last thing people want is a league decided by bad decisions. Incidentally you look at rugby and it's a much harder sport to referee, an infringement can be made in the middle of a scrum of 16 players and you never hear of any refereeing decisions going wrong - it's generally unheard of. Bizarre that football has so much money in it and yet things like this can happen. |
