Woo! Midnight! I wanted to share a song from a CD I bought a couple years ago called 'Folk is not a Four Letter Word, Part 2'. It's a compliation by Andy Votel, a producer/DJ who some of you may know has worked with Badly Drawn Boy and more recently Gruff Rhys, amongst numerous others. Anyway so I chose may favourite song from the CD and realised I knew nothing about it, so did a quick wikipedia and was happy to find quite an interesting story behind it.
So basically, this and other songs on the album 'Colour Green' were written and recorded in the early 70s by Sybille Baier at her home in Germany. However she never chose to do anything with them until her son found them 30 years later and decided to share them amongst familly and friends, including a member of Dinosaur Jr, who passed it on to a record label who released the album in 2006. Pretty incredible I'd say!
Enjoy :)

A little hard to get people interested in the tune when you have nothing to share/comment on re: said tune.

Sorry. It's a song I had heard a couple years ago when I was first getting into choral music. Originally I had only known about John Dowland and Arvo Pärt. It was partly by chance that I'd heard of him, which was actually the first time I'd been able to listen to the Classical radio station we have here. The problem is that it barely ever comes in! But for once, it was crystal clear. I was driving around aimlessly, admiring the sunset when my phone died. Well, there goes my music. So I decided to see if the station would finally come in. I was doubtful, but it did! And I was blown away. Who's this William Byrd fellow? Methinks there's some research in my near future! And I did some, and loved pretty much everything I heard. Though, I guess, that's not saying much. I'll listen to everything from Black Metal to Folk to Jazz and most all club oriented Electronic genres. One thing that I love about listening to him is the fact that his compositions are almost half a thousand years old! It's something from that long ago, coming through my speakers. Although John Dowland's are about that old as well, and I actually was close to posting Say Love if Ever Thou Didst Find, but decided on this one. Mainly because of the beautiful video that accompanies it. If anyone has time, definitely check that song out as well.

EDIT: And for the record, I figured most on here would probably know about Arvo Pärt, so that's also why I decided on either Dowland or Byrd.

imo one of the best bands to come out of the post-hardcore/math-rock scene were Meet Me In St Louis. Insanely talented guys with a great live energy, it's a shame they split. They combined snippets of real harmonic beauty with raging changes in rhythm and mood to create some really special music. This is the first track from their only album, "Variations on Swing".

This thread has been awesome so far, so in an attempt to keep it going. Here's something I've been listening to a lot recently. Don't know very much about it, except it's compellingly awesome. It's from 1982 - the band is called Antena and the song is called Camino Del Sol.

another song i'd not have known existed if it wasn't for someone covering it, British Sea Power did the honours on Rough Trade 25 Year Anniversary compilation (stop me if you think you've heard this one before) worth a listen...

Galaxie 500. Think the album was called 'Today', but forgot to upload onto the iPhone for the morning commute, so can't remember. Excited to listen through though, sounds like it could be a good album for the early morning drive to Glastonbury.

The Mae Shi. From their album HLLLYH. Was hard to pick a song from it but i went for "pwned". It starts at 2mins in the video sorry i cheated and put two songs but its the best quality youtube one i could find. I like how their sound is sloppy but they don't care cause it sounds pretty good. Defo check out the album, "Kingdom come" is an 11min electronic epic with the same intro as Pwned.

Not sure how well known this tune is, I found it through a Young Edits EP which featured an edit of this tune. Wiki says he suffers from manic depression and refused to sign to Elektra because they had Metallica on their roster, who Johnston believed to be possesed by the devil. Makes this heartbreaking tune all the more intriguing knowing the kind of mind that wrote it.

and heres the edit that introduced me to it. The EP also features a nice edit of Kate Bushs Cloudbusting

Do you mean by the Smiths? Bit confused.
I really love British Sea Power but heard a couple of tracks from their latest album and decided not to buy it, kind of because I thought it might ruin them for me. Would anyone that's heard it recommend it?

Not checked this thread in a while, didn't think it was still going quite so strong.

This is my ringtone:
Anyone who hasn't heard Clinic, really should. Such an unusual and unique sound and they play live dressed in all surgical outfits, which is cool. They are from Liverpool and this song was once on a Levis advert. That's about all I know about Clinic.
Also noticed people are just posting videos without any description. Can I refer you all back to Da RuLEz in the OP. Just makes it a bit more interesting if you tell us a bit about the band or the song in particular.

no, 'stop me if you think you've heard this one before' was the name of the rough trade compilation

the song was tugboat by galaxie 500

BSP covered it for the rough trade comp, i agree about BSP, they were great but seem a bit formulaic to me now, bought all the previous albums but haven't even given the newest one a listen, it's crazy how your interest can wane between albums...

anyway, i love clinic too, they taught me to always check out the support bands, they supported radiohead on their kid a tour and were brilliant

then when i saw them again a few years ago, wild beasts and these new puritans supported :)
