I dunno if it's different out there having kids outside the USA, but my friend who has 2 kids now hasn't been out with me to a night since this one;

Particularly here in California, the cost of living is so outrageously expensive, that, if you're not just supporting yourself, you have little time or money to go do something you want to do.

Imagine if that WAS YOUR last party?!?! Jesus.
also, to clarify, no I don't have any of my own. I don't know if I ever will, but that time for me probably wont be anytime soon (i'm 24 as I type)

A few of my friends are starting to have kids (I'm 28)...so the thought has certainly crossed my mind recently. I certainly do want them, but not before I'm married and can provide for them (which I can barely do for myself at the moment). House, then dogs, then wife, then kids. Five year time frame.

Ha, my planned trajectory was wife > house > kids.

Tough question. I'm not getting any younger, but priorities right now are on saving for house and my career (which means a lot of late hours in the office). And, perhaps more selfishly, trying to produce some half decent music.

That attitude fails to capture the point though. When you don't have kids you ultimately live life on a very selfish level. You make sacrifices sure, but really everything you do is an attempt to provide yourself with happiness, security and stability. When you have a child suddenly the most important thing in your life isn't you, it's not about what is most 'attractive' to you.

I'm sure the prospect isn't attractive even to parents. But I imagine the inescapable love you feel when you have a child of your own makes the attraction to certain lifestyles somewhat insignificant.

I don't have any kids though, so I might just be spouting shite.

Yeah you're spouting shit. Having children isn't selfless (the world is overpopulated - less of an issue in the UK, but still). A lot of people have children for entirely selfish reasons - to bring them happiness, for the unconditional love, for someone to care for them in old age, for vanity purposes...

Not having children isn't selfish. The person you're depriving in this theory doesn't exist.

Edit: Also your post is like having a child is something that just happens to you with no say in the matter. Contraception and abortion both exist.
