Was listening to The Fake Blood remix of 'anyway you choose to give it' the other day, still one of the best tracks of the past few years but it got me thinking about artists doing remixes of their own tracks...

It was seen in techno music very frequently about ten years ago and the remixes were often even more successful than the originals. It's not so popular now but still can see it and i think it's absolutely normal.

I actually prefer the Night Version of Girls on Film to the original

Good way of exploring other ideas you may have had for a track when working on it. Not that I consider myself an artist yet, but I often have multiple versions tracks when I'm working on them, each with different arangements/ideas.

I would say most of them don't intentionally remix their own tracks, alot of time when your producing tracks they can go off in another direction and you end up with two versions, sometimes they both end up being good and to prevent the haters spouting that the tracks sound similar or that your using the same sounds in you tracks..release it as a remix

Soulwax, anyone?

Well isn't that how the Fake Blood alias came about anyway? He didn't want to do it as DJ Touche because of how he thought he would look for remixing his own song. So he made the Fake Blood alias and then kept it a mystery for as long as he could.

My personal opinion on remixing your own songs is it's fine if it's an individual's remix of a collab track they made or vice versa. For example the Fake Blood remix of The Black Ghosts or Peter & The Magician remix of Yuksek. If it's "John's Song (John Smith Remix) by John Smith" then it seems a bit daft. I'm also not a fan of remixers doing two different versions of someone else's track.

shouldn't artists remixing their own tracks just be called a different mix a lot of the time though? like digitalism could have just called that 2 Hearts (Techno Mix)?

It was like that on all the old house records. Different time, different naming conventions.
