No, not the one The Special One was referring to on Im on Setanta Sports or that rapper...

Has anyone read it? Its that book about pickup artists.

Pretty interesting stuff about human behaviour and reactions. Thought the funniest bit is when he realises the whole thing is a joke because all he does now is hang out with guys :D

Yes I've read it, its interesting and a good read. Mystery is a legend. My friend always tries the strategies but he's nowhere near cool enough to make them work.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. Obviously.

Aristotle was not Belgian, the central message of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.

Yeah, I read it a little while back. Pretty interesting stuff, quite dark as well in some ways. Though I have to say that I was a little disappointed when I finally saw a picture of Neil Strauss and found out that he's nowhere near as ugly as he said he was...

They're nerds who had no social skills or confidence and I think its a little bit admirable that they made steps to recognise/alter a successful formula to appear as if they had confidence and social skills.

Having said that half of it is about pointing out how stupid it is because its about rehearsed lines and magic tricks etc to get the attention of women.

Almost literally judging a book by it's cover...

I found it a fairly compelling little study, after all, it's not meant to be a guide book on how to pick up girls that's a common enough misconception (though admittedly Neil Strauss did go on to write such a book). The subject matter is meant to be an outside look at the world of picking up in general, it's pros and cons and the experiences Strauss has as he becomes part of that world.

As for it demeaning people, I don't think that's always the case. Granted, some techniques were odd and sometimes downright wrong (Ross Jeffries...), but generally the pick-up techniques they talk about are just formalised (and sometimes exaggerated) versions of what any person would do if they liked a girl in a bar. Fair enough, the magic tricks and such take the idea a little far, but the principle itself is basically harmless.

I read this ages ago, pretty much what I thought... And fair play to people who go out and actively change something that they perceive to be wrong with them.
