The best Chuck Palahniuk for me is Invisible Monsters... it's amazing. Choke I was a little disappointed by.
And Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky is incredible

JG Ballard has died.... A sad day. Prolific enough to warrant an adjective based on his name. Empire of the Sun and Crash FTW

The crystal castles remix of em was ace. ;)

But seriously - anything published by CrimethInc. Especially a book called 'Evasion', I CANNOT recommend that book enough!!!

Murakami is a legend. I'm just about to finish Kafka on the Shore. Dance Dance Dance, After Dark and Norwegian Wood are all brilliant.

Also, Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk is one of my fave books.
And read Junky by Burroughs or On the Road by Kerouac... Everyone should read some beat generation stuff.

To the guy who's about to read Gravity's Rainbow... good luck. I got about 300 pages in and didn't have a fucking clue what was happening.
pynchon's a phenomenon. try the crying of lot 49 instead as a way into him. much easier and just as good

the little friend by donna tart's really good. also just finished reading Colson Whitehead's the illusionist, which is this noir exploration of elevator inspectors. really really good. muriel spark's the driver's seat is fantastic too. surprised no one's mentioned catcher in the rye yet. not a teenager any more, but still think it's so amazingly written.

also, recently read netherlands by joseph o'neill. really good. and if you want to read something so bleak it numbs you, then try the road by cormac mccarthy. pushes aristotle's ideas on catharsis to the absolute limit.

i do english, and i get no time to read anything outside of what's on my course. it's a massive shame.

The Contortionists Handbook - Craig Clevenger

Very good book! When Chuck Palahniuk is saying "I swear to God this is the best book I have read in easily five years. Easily. Maybe ten years." on the cover you're looking at a good thing!

Bump.

Anyone reading any good books at the moment? Few good suggestions in this ancient thread.

I'm reading Harbour by John Ajvide Lindqvist, which I'm enjoying so much I'll finish it soon. So I need more good books.

Currently reading East of Eden, only about 200 pages in but I'm loving it so far, getting a lot more into the characters than I did with Grapes of Wrath.

I'm half way through Statistics (Freedman/Pisani/Purves) and really enjoying it. Bit different to the other suggestions here, but I thoroughly recommend it if you have any interest in statistics/maths.

A novel written in second person? Sounds epic, I'll be checking this one out.
