Basically my cousin purchased his mac without Apple Care. He bought it from the online store and hes hearing a slow whirring/clicking sound from the left hand side when it is just running normally. Im suspecting the fan may have a problem or it may be dirty. Can anyone just tell me what sort of cover he has? I have looked elsewhere but haven't found it and its really annoying me looking!

its the new 15" top end mbp, the only thing better is the 17inch one, and who likes to carry around a laptop the size of a iMac? Not me!

Thanks for your help though?

12 month warranty, so if its new its covered and he can get it fixed or a replacement for free.

Give the nearest Apple Store a call and the Genius Bar should take it off your hands :)

Ive a feeling there isn't one is Leeds, so it may be a trip to Sheffield or Manchester, but I shall give them a call none the less. Cheers Mat :D

whirring and clicking is generally a hard drive fault in my experience.

do it quick!

I think Meadowhall is the nearest one.

I download the CmC app and changed the fan speeds, I boosted it from 2000rpm to 6000rpm in a bid to try and remove anything which makes the noise but to no avail. On a positve note iStat Nano is reading the rpms on both fans to be pretty much the same. Its therefore proably a bearing or something in the fan thats got a little dirt on it. Should be a quick swop of fans by a genius at the store.

Im assuming when you book to see a genius online that the ''mac'' box is in reference to all macs under the problem field?

1 year warrant with a laptop is truly awful, id recommend getting stuff from john lewis where you get a 3 year at no cost on electronics (but not ipods)

Buy Applecare if you have a single braincell.

I don't have any braincells and now my CD drive has died and it's gonna cost £200 to get it fixed (roughly the same price as applecare). Also, you can only cant buy applecare within the 12 month warranty period so get saving, it'll be worth it.
