Looking on Decks.co.uk, from cheapest to expensive mixer wise, you're talking around the same price for a 2/3 channel mixer and the reviews as you say are good for the DDM4000. So, maybe that's my mixer dilemna sorted for now.

Right, so, by via USB i mean, have a controller plugged into a usb port on me laptop, and then have it so that, maybe if I kill/fade the mids on a track on the controller then it kills/fades the relevant track on Ableton. Is the APC40 my best choice?

If you can afford the APC40, it looks pretty damn awesome. Behringer's BCR and BCF-2000 units are quite cheap and does the trick. Daft Punk uses them so they can't be that bad, huh? But the APC looks like the best All-in-1 midi-controller for Ableton in my view. I'd wanted a few extra knobs, apart from that it's pretty much perfect

I use my DDM4000 to do that. Just need a midi-interface (2 midi connectors - USB. Pretty cheap on ebay) and then you can map as much of the mixer as you like to ableton. Depends whether you wanna use the DDM as a full 4 channel mixer and maintain use of the sampler, mic channel and cross fader sections. Obviously you can't use all it's functions as a mixer if you wanna use some of it for midi. But you could enable 1 or 2 channels for audio and use the rest of the mixer for midi control. It's basically just a glorified computer and you can access as many settings as you like.

Another handy feature is that you can easily save and load different user settings depending on how you want to set up. So I have 3 basic presets which I can switch to at the push of the button - No midi, Midi-Enabled on all but 2 channels which can be used for audio, and full midi with no audio (if you use it for this you'll need to run the audio from your laptop into another mixer/amp via an external soundcard. Will need to use soundcard to cue in your headphones too. Good for gigging if you want to plug into the club mixer)

I feel like I'm working for Behringer now. Not cool.

Mm, I think it's my best option.

Behringer DDM 4000 - £252.77
Akai APC40 - £399.00

Total - £651.77

Hmm.. when's my birthday, and which do I buy first :O

--Edit .. Digital Glasses, right, I understand what you mean, and that's what I thought I could do up until a few hours ago.
Say i get the DDM4000, and the connectors, can I have one channel on the mixer as one channel in ableton, and another as my second channel? Does that make sense?

I use the UC33e too. I like it a lot, it's mad versatile, but I just wish the faders and knobs felt a bit less cheap. Also, they could all do with being a little bit bigger! When I'm getting into the mix I like to throw the faders around a bit and generally be flamboyant...

Actually shit. I want a controller which I can map midi controls to via USB.. that's my only option.

Have you guys any recommendations for a Controller which will allow me to map VIA USB. I'm using Ableton :)

I'm just about 100% ready to buy the APC40 as I can't see any other viable solution..

And as an extra, I want a mixer which has an extensive array of effects I can use alongside my effects from Ableton, and I'm just about sold on the DDM4000 .. anyone got any recommendations there?
I've just got a DDM4000 backed up with a NanoPad and I can't recommend them enough! Esp if you're a bedroom DJ looking to get that first mixtape out there... they are golden, and sooooo cheap!

The DDM has a wealth of buttons that you hardly use that can be put to Midi use.... as long as you remember what they do (hehe!), and the Pad can be used to cue samples and loops etc, for me theyre the perfect paid at the moment!!!!!

Dude you won't find a better mixer out there for the price... the effects are lushhhhhhh... esp the Filters! I rinse that high pass!

It's also got a sampler and a very kool feature on the gain kills that allow you to select just one of the bass, mid and highs, and leave the other two off with just one button press... watch some youtube videos and get on it!

Works very well with Traktor & VDJ... I'm not an ableton user personally.. so can't give you any recommendation there!

I was going to ask, how much do these sort of things (uc33e) depriciate in value? And is there much of a market for 2nd hand ones?

It's just if I wanted to invest and one and have a crack at this dj malarky, say 6months - year down the line I find it's just not happening for me, will I be able to make up the majority of my investment?

They are like the industry standard as far as an entry level midi controllers come for use in Ableton etc.
Many artists use them Surkin, Bobmo, Felix Cartal etc

I believe the going rate for one second hand is about £100 and there about £130 to buy brand new, but yeah...to answer your question I would say that they very much hold there value

Mine still has the lcd display protector on it, with the 5 preset templates, boxed, and has only been used in my bedroom with a smoke-free environment etc...

I would ideally want £100 delivered for it but im open to offers as I purchased a DDM4000 today so paying some of the money back to but towards a sound card would be great...

Im interested in the uc 33

Have you sold it yet?

Have you used the uc 33 for production rather that for djing (controling plugins etc?)

I originally purchased it for djing in ableton/traktor but never got around to using it properly to be honest. It didnt have enough buttons to utilise traktor and I think djing in abletons pretty boring

But to answer your question, no I havent sold it just yet but a friends also interested. If nothing comes of that or here im probably putting it on eBay later this/next week

Yeah its the uc 33 or the Novation with the latter being only 80 quid was swaying it. But the uc 33 is the better package so id be interested when on ebay. Give me a heads up when its on mate.

So how many buttons/knobs/etc. would you think is enough for Traktor?
I honestly thought it had enough compared to the vestax (I don't use the jog wheels, pitch faders because I use the "master & slave" function.)

What are you replacing the UC33e with?

Well when I said not enough..when using the uc-33e in traktor you have to press most buttons twice for them to be recognised as being pressed. Thsi isnt great when your trying to punch in a song your wanting to drop in after a build.

I have replaced it with the DDM4000, I prefer a more hands-on approach
