He's entirely correct I think. It's futile to try and perform electronic music anyway, as it was never performed in the first place... a big impressive light show is all you can really do.

Okay true, but you know what I mean. Certainly it seems only very specific styles of electronic music do lend themselves well to live performance.

For me, the 'live' thing has always been a myth. deadmau5 is just telling it like it is.

Give me one solid DJ, two turntables, a mixer and a stack of good music please.

In my opinion, a 'live' performance is perfect for festivals. That way the artist will only play his own productions - the reason why people want to see an artist in the first place. It's more about showmanship, lights and other visual stuff that gets people excited. People at festivals mostly aren't that interested in music, they just want to party and hear music they already know.

In the case of a smaller venue / club, I fully agree with Patrick122 on 'the one dj and two turntables' thing. There's more 'space' for the DJ to play new / unknown tracks and the crowd has more knowledge of the DJ. Well, most of the time.

Anyway, I guess Joel is in some kind of late quarter-life / early mid-life crisis. He's realising he only made some music and all the time he spent on performing seem a waste of time because he didn't reach a higher goal except entertaining people. He suddenly realises walking around with a big mau5head playing electronic music isn't art.

I've probably seen more duff 'live' performances of dance music than duff ones, but the best ones, namely Orbital, SMD and the Chems, are brilliant and engrossing.

Quote:and its spewing out premixed (to a degree) stems of my original producitons

Firstly, spelling.

Secondly, having stems (by that I take he means all the drums, for example, in an entire track as clip) in a live set is very cheeky. That ain't live in my opinion.

To illustrate - Nathan Fake uses loops which are played with, skewed and combined differently each time he's at a gig. Much more improvisation is involved.

Nathan Fake interview on FACT mag Wrote:The live set-up hasn’t changed much at all, I’ve been doing live gigs for about eight years now and I think i’ve totally nailed what I have…my set is all about jamming and improvising on a theme, and tracks end up sounding really different to the recorded versions, in a pretty sort of non-calculated way – you just react and behave so differently in those enviroments compared to being in a studio.

“My live set is a proper live electronic music show, everything you hear is being done by me at that specific moment, rather than just playing five minute long pre-recorded parts in Ableton and occasionally adding reverb, or just playing my own tunes in Traktor and calling it a live set. Fuck that shit.”

Tl;dr - IMO, Deadmau5 is bitching about his own set-up because the visual effects seem to be limiting his own musical creativity.

Quote:“beatmatching” isnt even a fucking skill as far as im concered anyway. so what, you can count to 4. cool. i had that skill down when i was 3, so dont give me that argument please.

This made me think of something -

1. Has anyone seen him do a vinyl set before?
2. [EDIT] Is any of his work in anything other than a 4/4 time signature?

Quote:becausje none of the “top dj’s in the world” to my knowledge have. myself included.

Firstly, spelling, again.

Secondly, arrogant much?

Thirdly, hasn't he been very adamant about the fact he's not a DJ for ages? Thought I'd point out the hypocrisy.

Sure there's a few typos, sure there's some very bold ignorant statements, but you gotta give it him. The first person to actually come out from behind the smoke & mirrors of the "scene" and shed some light on what people are actually paying money for. Yes, most people wont care and festivals and raves will continue to sell-out, but most of the people in the audience have no idea that those songs are not being made right there on the spot and are playing others people's music (which is fine by me, depending on who i'm paying to see).

WRT the typos, I'm just being a bit pedantic.

I don't agree that he's the first person to come out and say this I must admit. Surely this is the age old Laptop DJ vs everyone else argument wrapped up in a new form - this time with a massive light show and mouse head...?

I totally get his underlying point here, but pffffffffffft.

You trying telling Ed and Tom that they're just a fancy light show with a big green play button.

He's partly right, too many DJ's are cheaters in that matter nowadays, including him, but he should wait till October when BN starts his live tour - he'll see a top DJ playing live Live.

Speaking of DJ Sneak anyone caught Tony Senghore calling him out yesterday on twitter? He accused him of not producing tracks himself. "You sit back and smoke weed while others produce your tracks."

How can you say that though? No one knows what the Boys Noize live tour will be like. It could be shit.
